May Updates
To all our mamas and friends!
“TO DESCRIBE MY MOTHER WOULD BE TO WRITE ABOUT A HURRICANE IN ITS PERFECT POWER. OR THE CLIMBING, FALLING COLORS OF A RAINBOW.” – MAYA ANGELOU
May is the month of motherhood! You know about Mother's Day, which is May 12. Each year, millions of dollars are spent on flowers, gifts, cards, and get-togethers as families celebrate the women who bring life, love, and order to their homes. Moms deserve this attention, and it's important that we also appreciate the toll nurturing, providing, supporting, and caregiving takes on women.
May 5 - 11 is Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week. The purpose of this week is to raise awareness of maternal mental health disorders like anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD, and psychosis.
May 12 - 18 is National Women's Health Week. This week is meant to highlight women's health issues and encourage women to prioritize their physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
Both Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week and National Women's Health Week share a common goal: combat the stigmas associated with poor mental and physical health. They do this through the powerful tool of storytelling. When women bravely share their personal struggles, challenges, setbacks, and successes, it not only diminishes feelings of guilt or shame but also inspires other women to take action or seek help.
Each week this month, we'll send information and links to resources about maternal mental health awareness. When women's mental health and well-being are supported, their physical health is, too. Your role in this is crucial. Our challenge for you this month is to share your voice in support of maternal mental health and its importance to women's overall health. Previa Alliance created a page on its website with maternal mental health facts and learning resources you can share with your friends and family. Click here to visit the page.
